Book Quotes:

Lois, Duke, Romeo and Roy at Lois Abrams' Office

Roy Nakai exemplifies a strong man with enormous insight, profound compassion and great wisdom. His life journey prepared him to reach the height of growth and the ability to overcome diversity.  I consider it an honor to have joined his path toward wholeness, acceptance, purpose and meaning.  In true Roy Nakai fashion he has shared his story with others as a means of enlightenment and enhancement.

– Lois Abrams, Ph.D.

After a series of life-altering tragedies, including failed marriages, and a hand injury that ended his 25 year career as a pediatric dentist, Dr. T. Roy Nakai reached the unenviable stage in life of a person who had lost almost all hope. With the persistent encouragement of his family and life-long friends, he sought professional help in the form of therapy, a place he always felt was for other people.

Upon meeting his therapist, Lois Abrams, he discovered that she always had her dog, Duke, in the office for their sessions. He discovered that Duke was both a comfort and a calming distraction while reliving his difficult journey. Over time, Lois enabled Dr. Nakai’s to accept events that he could not control in his life, shikata ga nai, and move forward, gaman, with his life to find new meaning.. He is now a strong proponent of counseling and therapy and of stress specialists who use animals as an aid during their sessions.

His own therapist, Lois Abrams studied the methods of Viktor Frankl* of Vienna, the neurologist and psychiatrist and founder of a branch of psychotherapy known as Logotherapy.  Unlike Freud who promoted the concept of pleasure as the motivating force behind human achievement or will to life, or Adler’s will to power, Frankl’s analysis focuses on the concept that finding one’s “meaning” in life is the basic and most powerful motivation that drives all humans.  There is further detailed information on Logotherapy at Wikipedia
